Burley Rails Cottage
Tracy lovingly bakes her shortbread at her home Burley Rails Cottage which is in the heart of the New Forest and close to The Cottage Lodge Hotel.
Her home was built in 1811 as a woodman’s cottage. The woodman was responsible for the fencing to keep the commoners animals out of tree growing nurseries called inclosure.
There are many cottages of the same design around the New Forest. These cottages have remained essentially the same for hundreds of years. They are owned by the Forestry commission and most are occupied by people who have chosen to live and work in the New Forest. These people hold key jobs such as keepers, agisters, forestry workers and forestry commission employees.
Often this is a lifestyle choice as they may also be commoners. Commoners are people who traditionally have the right to graze their herds of horses, cattle and pigs on the open forest.
Two hundred years after the cottage was built, Tracy Thew moved into Burley Rails Cottage. Tracy is a lady who loves to bake. She has made shortbread for family, friends and visitors to the New Forest for many years. This skill for making delicious shortbread has her listed with the prestigious New Forest Marque of excellence. This denotes her work as local as in grown, reared, brewed, caught or made within the New Forest. This of course ensures that produce is sourced sustainably, supporting our eco-friendly policy of reducing carbon emissions from deliveries.
Try some before you buy whilst you stay at the Cottage Lodge Hotel. They make ideal gifts or even better munch them with a lovely cup of something delicious!! They are a tasty treat and you know you are helping keep traditional and local businesses thriving!!
