Toilet paper – Little changes make a big difference
We have chosen “Who gives a crap” as our hotel room toilet paper. This young and vibrant company started up in 2012 after they learnt that 2.3 billion people across the world don’t have access to a toilet. That’s roughly 40% of the global population and means that around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That’s almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes. Something had to change!
Did you know?
We were amazed to find out that most toilet paper is still made with virgin trees. Not only are we cutting them down, wiping our bums and flushing them down the toilet, but we’re consuming loads of energy and water along the way.
At Who Gives A Crap, all of their products are made without trees, so we’re being kind to mother nature – because she’s amazing! They believe that trees should be for hugging, not wiping! Here in the New Forest we have to agree that the it would be a very different environment without the trees, wouldn’t it? So time to make some small changes, starting with our toilet paper that has a real difference globally!
Toilet fact
More people in the world have mobile phones than toilets. Think about that next time you’re texting on the loo!
They thought that was pretty crap. So in July 2012, Simon, Jehan and Danny launched Who Gives A Crap with a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo. Simon sat on a toilet in our draughty warehouse and refused to move until we had raised enough pre-orders to start production. 50 hours and one cold bottom later, we’d raised over $50,000 (see the video here!)
Growth of the company
They delivered their first product in March 2013 and have kept growing ever since. Not just because their toilet paper is gracing bathrooms across the country but also because they donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world.
Though they are still growing, and now make more than just toilet paper, they always wanted to stay true to their roots: toilet humor and making the world a better place.
They are so determined to prove that toilet paper is about more than just wiping bums. They make all of their products with environmentally friendly materials, and they donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets for those in need.
To date they have donated over $2.5m Aussie dollars (that’s the equivalent of a little over £1,400,000!) to charity and saved a heck of a lot of trees, water and energy. Not bad for a toilet paper company, eh?
This is why we have chosen to support this project by buying Who Gives A Crap toilet paper and we hope that you’ll appreciate too that the little changes make a huge difference!
