Introducing your guide…

Harry Oram lives on his smallholding in the middle of the Forest. He has over 40 years of experience as a Forester working for the Forestry Commission in several forests around Britain including the forests of Dean, Delamere, Snowdonia, Thetford and Bere.

For the last 20 years of his career he was Chief Forester at the New Forest where his responsibilities brought Harry into regular contact with staff from the Verderers, English Nature, The New Forest National Park and other Agencies with responsibilities on the Forest. Harry worked closely with them on many aspects especially heathland management and the safety measures taken to provide safety for the Commoners’ stock, the ponies, donkeys and cattle which range freely and graze the Forest.

Harry was often called upon to provide talks and tours for visiting parties from overseas who were keen to understand the practices of managing such an important and diverse site. On retirement these talks provided the inspiration for Harry to set up the New Forest Minibus Tours service to enable him to share his knowledge and experiences of this unique area.

Harry is the man in the know and he’s sure to entertain you with fascinating forest history and find you those magical moments to enhance your families stay.

There are many reasons to visit the New Forest as the summer turns to autumn, but one of the most interesting things to see has to be the ancient tradition of pannage. This annual event truly makes a visit to the New Forest something to remember.  Pannage is the practice of releasing domestic pigs into a forest and goes all the way back to the time of William the Conqueror, who founded The New Forest in 1079. In olden times 1000’s of pigs used to be released, nowadays up to 600 pigs and piglets will work their way through the forest eating the acorns and nuts from the forest floor.

This month the pigs have been released and now is the opportunity to view them foraging amongst the trees. The deer are starting their courtships or rut and the herds are amassing as the bucks display for the attention of the females.

So book now and take your family out on a “New Forest safari”. Look out for ponies & foals, cows & calves, deer, long horn cattle, donkeys, pigs and piglets.
